Today, a delegation of students and youth under the leadership of Sharifuzzaman Laskar, General Secretary, North East Congress Committee meet Minister of State for Home Department Ajay Makhan at his North Block office in New Delhi for immediate clearance of objection raised by Home Ministry in the naming of Silchar Railway Station as Bhasha Swahid Station. The representation consisting of Bazlur Rahman Khan, Convener of Barak Valley Students and Youth Association (BASYA), Central Committee; Moloy Roy, Joint Convener of the Central Committee, and Advocate Daiyan Hussain, General Secretary, BASYA Delhi Zone. Mr. Sharifuzzaman Laskar told Mr. Makhan that the naming of Silchar Railway station is a long standing demand of the people of Barak Valley to respect eleven martyrs who laid their lives in the cause of mother tongue on that very particular railway station. He also put up some examples of the changing of railway station’s name in West Bengal and other places. Mr. Bazlur Khan told honorable minister that if Mumbai’s railway station Victoria Terminal became Chatrpati Shivaji Terminal why not Silchar station as Bhasha Swahid Station, since lakhs of people of the valley wanted it. Adv. Daiyan told the minister that our constitution provided rights to the speaker of each and every languages and eleven Swahid actually let their lives for the protection and dignity given by Indian Constitution. The naming of station is the proper token of respect to the martyrs.
Mr. Ajay Makhan assured the delegation that Central Government seriously considering the naming of Silchar Railway Station as Bhasha Swahid Station. And invited the delegation for another round of meeting on Monday. He also asked for some specific examples where the name of station is changed after language and movement. Mr. Makhan was very cordial from his side and assured all sorts of help to the delegates.
